Botanical Skincare is an age old tradition with deep roots. It is deceptively simple though. It’s just adding modifiers to a cream or lotion base All botanical lotions or skincreams are Emulsions, to create an emulsion you mix both oil and water with an emulsifier.

There are usually no less than 4 base elements to most botanical skincreams or lotions. 1 a water base (infused with botanicals), 2. an oil, 3 an emulsification agent 4 a preservative to make your botanical skincream or lotion you will want to use an an herbal infusion as the water, and an oil (or mixture of oils) from this list then add an emulsifier and a preservative.

Oils –
Olive Oil – Used for centuries to clean and enhance the skin.
Calendula Oil Infusion – Calendula is beneficial in skin care, soothing inflammation, controlling bleeding and healing damaged tissue.
Almond oil – Almond oil is an excellent emollient and moisturizer. As an emollient it softens and nourishes the skin helping to keep it smooth to the touch.
Emu oil – increasing in popularity as a therapeutic agent for inflammatory conditions involving pain..
Sunflower Oil – high Omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acid content is good for yourskin.
Beeswax – By Locking in Moisture beeswax softens the skin and additionally creates a long-lasting protective covering resistant to the environment. Beeswax is really a naturally nourishing moisturizing agent together with being antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergenic and also a germicidal antioxidant.
Jojoba oil – natural wax from Jojoba seed. jojoba can fool the skin into thinking it is producing enough oil, thus evening out oil production.

Water Infusions –

Chamomile Flower – A chamomile Infusion is Recommended for the fragile facial skin around the eyes, Chamomile has Antifungal properties and is both cleansing and soothing, in addition it helps to reduce inflammation as well.

Thyme – Thyme is great to use for acne or eczema because of it’s anti-bacterial properties.

Preservatives –

Bergamot – helps soothe inflammation, antiseptic qualities of bergamot help accelerate healing by reducing chance of infection.
Grapefruit oil – works as a mild disinfectant.

Emulsifiers –
Emulsifying Wax NF – aids the emulsion process and helps make it more stable.
Lecithin – makes a creamy lotion or very dense cream. It takes some practice to get it to behave.
Egg Yolk – egg yolk contains great natural emulsifiers.
Acacia Gum – emulsifier that also stabilizes and has a low viscosity.
