The 7th annual report of the survey – “Computer Crime and Security Survey,” by the Computer Security Institutions, states that about 90 percent of respondents detected a security breach in the past year. However, only 34 percent reported the intrusions to law enforcement officials. Cyber crime is a term for everything from cracking to denial of services that causes e-commerce sites to face loss. Cyber Crime has become important as the Internet has turned to a pool of entertainment, commerce and a basic need for the government functioning. The increasing crimes against information on computers had started to focus in the Country’s capitals.
The probability of arrest and prosecution of cyber criminals is less as they sneak on the Internet in-to the financial health of business with the trust of their customers and emerge as threat to country’s security. Cyber Crimes are very easy to learn and the laws of most countries do not clearly forbid them. Crimes committed through Internet leaves certain evidences such as backup files and system logs which when accessed could taint it inadmissible by overwriting date and time.
Cyber Crime involves 2 types – Phishing and Pharming. Cyber Crime cases like – spam, cyber stalking, email fraud and hacking are growing in-spite of Cyber Crime Cells being launched in major cities of the Country. Many cases remain unreported and the problem of Cyber Crime remains uprooted due to lack of awareness among the people. United States having accustomed to the widespread Internet and the Computers very early is the main victims of Cyber Crime. They are usually specific crimes with victims, where the criminal remains invisible on the Internet. Another type of Cyber crime is where a person within the government alters data for his profit.
Identity theft is one of its kinds that affect real and virtual body with different effects. In the U.S, individuals are provided with a Social Security Number as an Identification number. Access to a person’s Security Number allows him to gather all documents related to his Citizenship – Merely stealing his Identity. This Security Number can be re-framed with Credit cards, Driver’s License creating new identities for the Criminals. The criminals open new bank accounts and receive loans with the victim’s record and security number which the victim gets to know only when the debts get high.
In the case of ATMs’ where the person provides his card and his Personal Identification Number (PIN) – Cyber Crime has evolved with means to intercept the data on a person’s card’s magnetic strip and his PIN. This information is used in creating fake cards to withdraw funds. Sabotage – A Type of hacking that hijacks a government’s website. In 1996, the U.S Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)’s website was hijacked by the Swedish Hackers for international support against the Swedish Government’s prosecution of local hackers.
The dreadful truth is that no computer in the world is cracking proof. Cyber Crime is emerging worldwide with thousands of criminals uprooting every day.
