Pretty much every adult has at least one moment of “I would really like to have my own garden!” Perhaps one person dreams of growing his own vegetables. Perhaps someone dreams of creating a lush rose garden. No matter what kind of garden you want to grow or how extensive you want that garden to be, you are going to need specific gardening tools to help you put your garden together. Just about everything you do in a garden can be done using your hands (and your own personal brute strength). With the right gardening tools you can save yourself quite a bit of time as well as prevent basic wear and tear on your body. Here are some of the gardening tools that you can use to help you.
Garden rakes are a must. A garden rake is not the same thing as the yard rake you will use when you need to gather leaves together for bagging at the end of the fall season. A garden rake is more sturdy and not as long and it has very strong steel teeth. Adjustable width garden rakes are far superior to fixed width rakes because you can make them fit into just about any project that you take on. Adjustable width rakes are more cost effective because you only have to purchase the one rake while you would need to purchase a variety of fixed width rakes to get the same jobs done. Gardeners use garden rakes for the smoothing out and leveling of earth in the garden plot.
Another tool you will want is a kneeler or two. Gardening is mostly done close to the ground so you will spend a lot of time balancing on your hands and knees. It is easy to make your own garden kneelers out of large pieces of Styrofoam or foam core. Gardening mats are also available for purchase if you don’t want to make your own. Kneelers and mats can help ease the burden on your knees. Many gardeners choose to use mats and kneelers because they help keep their clothing from getting to worn while they garden.
At least one big rake is needed. A garden rake is fantastic for small patches of land. For gardeners who tend large gardens, however, a big rake is a necessity. Rakes are used for a lot more than the simple gathering of leaves. Before you begin planting, use your big rake to turn and smooth the soil that you will be planting in. Gardeners can also use the flat side of a big rake to smooth down the tops of their gardens. Plastic rakes are meant for leaves. Garden rakes-even full sized rakes-are usually made of metal (usually steel). Gardening can be an incredibly rewarding hobby as well as a fantastic profession. The more you learn about gardening the more you will want to purchase the tools being sold at your local plant store or gardening department. Before you drop a bunch of money on a tools that you might not need, start with a few basic necessities. There are “must haves” and “luxury” gardening tools and the more time you spend gardening the easier it will be to tell the two apart.
