Much has been written about the detox diet (detoxification) over the decades. It seems the past ten years, roughly, have seen an explosion of these diets. The basic principle is the same across all of them, and that is to use foods (or liquids) to help your body get rid of toxins. First, we must caution you and suggest you talk to your doctor before embarking on any kind of detox diet. Many people turn to this overall approach when they want to lose weight. While it is possible to achieve that, we feel the loss will be temporary for a variety of reasons. We will talk more about the detox diet in the rest of this article.

One thing about detox diet programs, if one doesn’t work for you, there are many more that you can try. When you start a diet to detoxify your body, you will be eating and drinking things that are meant to have an effect on your body. Of the many substances used in detox diets, two of the primary ones are fiber and water, because they help stimulate the various organs. Removal of toxic wastes products is something that must happen on a daily basis for continued good health. Bowel movements are required on a daily basis to keep the intestinal tract free of toxic waste build-up. The vascular system should remove waste products from the cells, but without proper elimination, toxic wastes can go back in the wrong direction. Studies have shown that when the body is more acidic than alkaline, it will be more unhealthy. The main goal of most detoxification diets is to return the body’s pH levels back to alkaline. Many cleansing diets are composed of only liquids, of which water is the most important, but also herbal teas, ginger teas, and lemon water are included. The use of herbs in America may be recent, but other cultures know of the many possible herbal cleansing substances. There are many reliable reference guides that can give you the necessary information about herbal teas. Since water by itself can be used for detoxing, adding herbal teas just makes the preparation much more powerful.

One particular detox diet is known as the Master Cleanse. Another common name for this one is the lemonade diet. This method is more like a fast in which only lemonade with maple syrup and cayenne pepper is consumed. As you can clearly see, this seems pretty hardcore and is not for everyone. One well known entertainer was in the news because she lost weight while on the lemonade diet. However, she later reported that she gained the weight back after coming off of it. But keep in mind this is a detox diet and not a lose weight diet. Also, doctors have warned that women in certain situations should not use this approach. So – see your doctor if this diet appeals to you and be safe, always.

It’s doubtful that it would be easy to find any adult who wouldn’t benefit by a detox diet, even for a short period of time. Cultures that eat highly processed foods, such as America, would definitely benefit from an annual detoxification. Unfortunately, maybe the resistance of social elements opposed to alternative methods contribute to detox diets being less recognized and accepted.
