There is no rule that says gardeners must own a lot of expensive gardening equipment; at the same time, however, owning the right gardening tools can make your job so much easier. Why use your bare hands to dig holes when the hand trowel sitting next to you doe the same thing? The simple fact of the matter is that the right tools are very important-no matter what it is that you want to accomplish.

Many new gardeners say that figuring out which tools they really need is difficult. If you want to grow a gorgeous garden, here are some of the most important tools that you should buy.

Every single gardener, no matter how much experience he or she has, needs a sturdy pair of gardening gloves. Gardening gloves help protect your hands as you work in the dirt and with the plants. You might enjoy the feeling of digging in the dirt with non-gloved hands but gloves will help keep your hands safe and clean while you work. Rose gardeners, for example, use gardening gloves to protect their hands from getting scratched up and stuck by thorns.

Gloves can also protect your hands when you work with compost, fertilizers or other substances that can leave residues on your hands. Gloves can also protect your hands against bugs you might encounter on your plants or in the dirt.

Even if you only have a small patch of garden in your yard, a pitchfork is a wonderful tool to have on hand. Pitchforks can do the same things that your trowels and spades can do but on a larger scale. Pitchforks are great earth turners, compost movers and soil aerators. As compost breaks down it will need to be turned-this is something that only a pitchfork can do easily and quickly. If you don’t turn your compost it will just get hard and you won’t be able to use it.

One garden tool no ground gardener should be without is a shovel. If your garden is large, you should definitely purchase at least one long handled shovel to keep nearby. A shovel helps you scoop and move dirt and earth quickly and easily. While you could do this with your hands, using a shovel produces a neater result. Relocating a large quantity of dirt and earth could be very difficult if you try to do it without a shovel. Your work in the garden will be so much easier to do if you have the help of a shovel with a long handle.

Gardening is thought to be a very relaxing activity. There is something inherently calming about the act of “playing in the dirt” that many people enjoy after a long or stressful day. Often gardeners start this hobby using only their hands. After some time has passed the use of gardening tools doesn’t feel so complicated. Before you know it your gardening tools will start to feel as familiar to you as your own limbs. The more time you put into your garden the easier it will be to use gardening tools. You will wake up one day surprised to find gardening to be very enjoyable!
