A motorcycle fairing is an outer cover laid on top of the motorcycle frame. It functions to minimize wind drag and essentially provide protection to the rider. Motorbike fairing kits are a set of protective casings attached to a cycle. The main function of fairing kits is to increase the speed of the bike by lessening the wind drags. In addition, they also help in the reduction of fuel consumption by the machine. Furthermore, the rider is protected from road hazards caused by harsh weather conditions. The motorcycle fairing kit provides the rider with wind protection thus avoiding the effects of wind such as frostbite, hypothermia and windburn.
Different materials are used in the manufacture of fairing kits. Among the different types of materials in use, the most popular material is called acrylonitrile butadiene styrene otherwise referred to as ABS plastic. The popularity of ABS plastic in the manufacture of fairing kits is due to its lightweight nature, robustness and flexibility. ABS plastic manufactures is mostly used in the manufacture of sports bike fairings as well as the creation of a couple of aftermarket fairings.
As mentioned, manufactures prefer ABS plastic as opposed to other materials because it is robust due to its composition which consists of three main components namely butadiene, acrylonitrile and styrene. The production of ABS plastic involves the combination of two processes namely, the injection mold and compression techniques.
The injected mold technique involves the injection of the melted ABS plastic into a mold. A consistent amount of pressure is applied so that the material does not shrink when cooled down and toughened inside the mold. The injection mold mechanism ensures that all the material constituents gain a more consistent thickness and precise fit.
The compression mold mechanism is such that the ABS plastic is preheated and then put into a hot metal molding. Consistent amount of pressure is applied to the mold so that the ABS plastic material acquires the shape of the mold. The molding pressure is characterized by two main components namely pressure and heat. The flipside of the compression mold technique is that the motorcycle fairing outcome may vary. Besides ABS plastic, fiberglass is also used in the production of motorcycle fairings. Fiber glass also known as glass-reinforces plastic consist of woven fibers. They are usually used to reinforce polymer products.
Motorcycle fairings manufactured from fiberglass are common in racing bikes. Fiber glass is more lightweight and stronger as compared to ABS plastic. The fact that fiberglass can be restored after damage by applying a new coating made of from a mixture of fiberglass and polymer makes it popular among manufactures. Carbon is another material used in the manufacture of motorcycle fairings. It is the lightest and most expensive in comparison to fiber glass and ABS plastic. It is commonly use in Kawasaki fairings.
The market offers a wide variety of fairing kits. These motorcycle fairings are available in different shapes, sizes and designs thus it is important to choose a fitting motorcycle fairing kit for your ride. The present computer age allows online shopping for Honda fairings, Ducati fairings, Yamaha fairings, GSXR fairings, Suzuki fairings, YZF fairings and CBR fairings.
