Perfect Memory Training by Fiona McPherson is an extensive guide to improving your memory capacity and efficiency. McPherson holds a PhD is psychology and is regarded as a prominent expert in the subject of memory related research. A word of warning: the book isn’t really a comprehensive how-to guide; a huge portion of it is actually devoted to understanding memory. Many techniques for improving memory were developed, thanks to the in depth research performed by McPherson and others experts in the field. The issue is, not everything works for everyone. A number of factors including cultural, psychological, intellectual, and genetic variations make every human mind different.
There are lots of books that give memory improvement methods without giving a clear explanation as to how exactly they work. It might be easy to follow directions on memory improvement that are spelled out in a step-by-step fashion, but it’s not always easy to adapt them to your life. For instance, what if you’re told to imagine the place where you first saw a person so you can conveniently remember the face, but you actually have to look at the executive photo gallery to familiarize yourself with the individuals who’ll be attending the company meeting? Since you haven’t met these people, and all the photos are on the same wall, this trick won’t be much help.
Not like other books, Perfect Memory gives you the information and methods you need you could actually apply to your life. The first half of the book is dedicated to how memory operates. You’ll learn how your mind creates and retrieves memories, and even more importantly, what makes a memory easy to remember. After that it goes into the process of finding out what exactly is worth committing to memory. The first half of the book ends with a description of the different parts of memory and what’s involved in your working memory.
Strategies for better recall are tackled in the second half of the book. You will find a few tricks for enhancing your ability to recall things. There’s also information on enhancing learning, attention span, and strategic thinking. These concepts are all linked to, and occasionally confused with, memory. The book concludes with a number of quizzes to test your memory. Additionally there is a glossary of terms and a list of books McPherson suggests.
Perfect Memory Training by Fiona McPherson is available in paperback and Amazon e-book. At around $10, this book is a great investment for anyone who is fascinated with memory training. Having said that, if you’re after a how-to book on memory training, this book will likely disappoint you. Just one single chapter in the book is devoted to memory tricks and techniques, so you will be better off obtaining a book like The Memory book: The Classic Guide to Improving Your Memory. If you want to understand what makes your memory tick, Perfect Memory Training is for you!
