There isn’t one style that is the best but it is in accordance with the person’s personality and the goals they wish to accomplish. The environment or situation likewise determines the type of leader required like a group of school children requires a leader that is different from a group of soldiers heading off to combat. We’ll focus in on a few of the unique leadership styles and take a look at what the pros and cons are for each.
The classic leadership style is known as the autocratic style. This style is essentially where a leader orders every person to do what they are told with no input from anybody else. Questioning authority or articulating a viewpoint is simply not accepted by the autocratic leader. The autocratic style isn’t notably popular in any setting and generally brings about a revolt of some type. Autocratic leadership does have its place but you’re going to find it practically nonexistent in the business arena.
The exact opposite of the autocratic style is the Laissez Faire style wherein leadership is pretty much entirely hands off. A laissez faire style supervisor or small business owner will give a project to his workers and let them approach it in their own way. This type of leadership can be extremely effective if every person involved is competent at what they do and are really self motivated. It usually is most effective in family businesses or small sized businesses where the people know each other well. In large organizations, it can result in inefficiency and some people not carrying their weight. Quite often, people do need some direction and focus to complete a task and many times people won’t take the initiative to make things happen.
One more leadership style is the charismatic style where the leader’s personality is key to leading a team. The media enjoys focusing on charismatic leaders, because they make for interesting accounts. The charismatic leader has a way of getting individuals to react positively to doing a particular task. Regrettably, this is something that can’t actually be taught and not everyone can be this sort of leader either. This may also lead to errors when the charismatic leader is incorrect but people are far too much under his spell to realize it. Charismatic leadership is best when merged with other leadership styles; on its own, it can lead to difficulties, such as a cult like admiration for the leader.
These leadership styles are just some that you might run into but there are definitely more. Given that everyone is different, you will discover leaders that combine many of the different leadership styles to make it their own.
