Amidst the national debate about education, we often hear about what the government, the school board, the teachers, or the administrators could do to help make our children smarter. We hear about class size reduction, charter schools, teacher performance reviews, tenure, and a host of other reform ideas, all centered on the idea that schools – and not parents – have the power to boost our children’s intelligence. Yet while it is almost certainly true that our public school system is failing the nation’s children, parents should not despair: At C2 Education, we believe that the path to brilliance begins not at school but at home.

A 2007 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) report titled To Read or Not to Read: A Question of National Consequence paints a stark portrait of reading in our country. First, the report established that reading is intrinsically linked to success:
• Reading for pleasure correlates strongly with academic achievement – frequent readers score better on both reading and writing tests
• The more often a student reads for pleasure, the higher his test scores are likely to be
• 63% of employers rate reading comprehension as a “very important” job skill
• 38% of employers find high school graduates to be deficient in reading ability
The report went on to describe the reading habits of our youth:
• Just 31% of thirteen year olds read for pleasure on a daily basis
• Only 22% of seventeen year olds read for pleasure on a daily basis
• The amount of reading required for school is less than 15 pages per day for 62% of 17 year olds

The research is clear: Reading is a fundamental and necessary skill for success, yet our children read less today than they did just a few decades ago. Instead, today’s youth spends nearly 2 ½ hours per day using some sort of media – watching television, playing video games, or spending time online.
Parents often wonder what their children should be reading. The truth is that any reading is better than no reading at all: Whether a student reads a magazine article or a novel, the important thing is that they read. When children are younger, they should be encouraged to read for fun because children who embrace reading for pleasure at a young age are more likely to continue to read as adults. When children reach high school, they should still be encouraged to read for pleasure, but they should also strive to read as many classics and challenging books as possible in order to prepare for college.
For help turning a non-reader into an avid reader, speak with your child’s teachers and counselors for recommendations.
