The B&B sector in Whitby is filling a gap in the accommodation market between the hotels and the guest houses. Throughout the year, many of the local population of Whitby are opening their homes to paying guests. Possibly to supplement their income or even to pay for the little extras in life. Whitby B&B accommodation helps both the home owners and also the visitors who, perhaps, are on a restricted budget and cannot afford the prices charged by the larger establishments.

This once busy fishing port on the north east coast in the County of North Yorkshire has, over a period of time, changed from the dependence on the fishing industry to realise the potential from the tourism market. Whitby has finally received recognition in its own right, and is no longer standing in the shadows of its larger neighbour, Scarborough.

Year upon year, this bustling town is growing in popularity. It has wide coverage on the television screens including the popular programme of ‘Heartbeat‘ a ficticious light-hearted country police series set in 1960’s Yorkshire, in addition to famous cook-off programmes and travel documentaries. Well noted in literary publications (Possession, Whitby Witches and Room 13), the town has also played host to a number of large screen film productions namely Possession, Scott of the Antarctic and Captain Jack. The picturesque setting and its historic background have captured the interest of numerous visitors year upon year.

B&B establishments are situated in many parts of Whitby. It seems that on nearly every street or road, there is a ‘vacancy’ sign on a seemingly private home.Private houses are allowed to operate for bed and breakfast for under six paying guests without having to register with the local Fire services. However, for any accommodation registered with the Local Tourist Information Service, then a full Fire certificate is required along with an inspection to ensure that the standard and safety of the property is assured.

There is a huge choice available to the potential visitor in the style and size of the bed and breakfast houses around the town. Some of these establishments advertise on the internet or in the local accommodation guide, and many have photographs of the interior displayed near the entrance.

During the busy summer months the influx of visitors coming into the town can see the Places to Stay in Whitby full to capacity. The town has seen its population numbers swell in the spring and autumn, over the past few years, with the introduction of various events throughout the year. Gothic Weekends, are primarily responsible for this, and attract visitors from all over the country and many from overseas. The town is swathed in Gothic surrealism with large numbers of folk dressed in all things Gothic. The shop windows are decorated in the Gothic purple and black style as are the public houses and cafes. Hundreds of visitors flock to see the wonderful costumes worn by both the ladies and the gentlemen. Crinolines abound alongside top hats and tails. Over the years, however, the autumn event merges with Halloween with the effect that there are numerous fancy-dress costumes on display around the streets and public areas making for a carnival like atmosphere.

In conclusion, the bed and breakfast accommodation establishments fulfil the needs of a number of visitors wishing to spend some time in the historic town of Whitby but who would be unable to stay if they had to pay the higher prices of the larger establishments. Other benefits include a homely atmosphere where visitors are given individual attention many forging long lasting friendships returning year upon year to enjoy the many delights of Whitby Town.
