As its popularity has increased, so too has the number of accommodation places, retail outlets and restaurants and cafes. The public houses have all been here for many years, however, plying their trade to the fishermen and locals alike. Since the early Victorian times there have been the boarding houses and perhaps one or two of the larger hotel establishments catering to the needs of the minority of the population able to spend leisure time away.

Rising to meet these demands, proprietors and landlords of Places to Stay in Whitby have increased rapidly to offer a full range of choice. Visitors on a limited budget or indeed by personal choice may choose a camp site or a caravan park. Bed and breakfast together with guest house and boarding houses can offer a keenly priced package suitable for the more modest pocket. Hotels offer a more substantially priced tariff based obviously on the quality and range of standards available.

An alternative, however, and an increasingly popular choice is that of the ‘Whitby Cottages‘. This term loosely encompasses the full spectrum of self catering accommodation from holiday flats, apartments and houses to the actual cottages themselves. For the visitor, the freedom from restraints of breakfast times, room vacation and house rules means a more relaxing, ‘chill out’ time away.

The term ‘holiday cottage’ conjures up a picture of the traditional cottage and rose garden. This could be appropriate but with only a handful in Whitby. The majority of the cottages are to be found along the narrow streets and small alleys or gunnels. More ofen than not, these will be former ‘fishermens’ cottages dating from the 1800s, some even earlier. Other cottages are to be found situated around the town and are probably houses/bungalows, still of the same quality but of a different layout. Whatever the form that these cottages take, they all must be registered with the local tourist office if they are to be listed in their accommodation bureau. They must all be registered with the English Tourist Board and adhere to strict guidelines as to their standards of cleanliness and quality of furnishings. More importantly, they must conform to the safety requirements of the Fire Brigade. .

Styles and interior design vary between the various assortment of ‘cottages’ . Modern and contemporary styles are more obviously available in the more recently contructed buildings but this is not to say that some of the older type of properties have not incorporated this interior design. Some of the older properties are, indeed, quaintly furnished but notwithstanding this quaintness, they will have the modern conveniences and facilities as would be expected by visitors in this day and age.

The freedom allowed by holidaying in these types of establishment enables the visitor the escape from the rigid rules of serviced accommodation. Many of the ‘cottages’ will allow family pets ( owner permitting and possibly a small charge) Booking of the holiday cottages is normally through the many letting agencies or maybe by advertising by the individual owners. Newspaper holiday advertisements from both the single owner and the multi company agencies are the main source of bookings but recent years have seen the growth of internet advertising. This medium gives the potential customer the ability to view the interior of the property, look upon the map (google) and find directions.

Whatever choice is made, the visitor is assured of a wonderful location in which to holiday, no matter what time of year, whatever the weather, Whitby has a little of something for everyone.
