As its popularity has increased, so too has the number of accommodation places, retail outlets and restaurants and cafes. The public houses have all been here for many years, however, plying their trade to the fishermen and locals alike. Since the early Victorian times there have been the boarding houses and perhaps one or two of the larger hotel establishments catering to the needs of the minority of the population able to spend leisure time away.

Rising to meet these demands, proprietors and landlords of Places to Stay in Whitby have increased rapidly to offer a full range of choice. For a limited budget there are the camping sites and caravan parks. Guest houses and bed and breakfast establishments can offer a medium price range with a range of different services available. Hotels offer a more substantially priced tariff based obviously on the quality and range of standards available.

An alternative, however, and an increasingly popular choice is that of the ‘Whitby Cottages‘. This term loosely encompasses the full spectrum of self catering accommodation from holiday flats, apartments and houses to the actual cottages themselves. The freedom from restraints of mealtimes and room vacation means a more relaxing holiday for the visitor.

Most people when thinking about holiday cottages have a minds eye of a quaint little cottage with garden. This may be the case with a handful of holiday cottages in Whitby, but a large majority of them are to be found in the small narrow streets of the town. Many of these are former ‘fishermens’ cottages and date from the early 1800s and some, in fact, are considerably older. More cottages are to be found situated around the town and would not necessarily be ‘cottages’ but in all probability will be houses or bungalows, flats or even apartments. Whichever building is chosen, the potential visitor will be guaranteed that the establishment is registered with the local tourist office or the English Tourist Board, or they will not be allowed on the accommodation register.Any establishment registered with the English Tourist Board must adhere to strict guidelines, including fire safety checks. .

Various interior designs are to be found in the assortment of ‘cottages’. The more recently built properties are probably furnished in the contemporary style but not necessarily all, indeed some of the older properties are decorated as such. Some of the older properties are, indeed, quaintly furnished but notwithstanding this quaintness, they will have the modern conveniences and facilities as would be expected by visitors in this day and age.

The freedom allowed by this choice of accommodation limit’s the rigidity of the serviced bed and breakfasts and hotels, enabling guests to freely come and go and even have the ability (owners permitting) to bring the family dog! Booking of the holiday cottages is normally through the many letting agencies or maybe by advertising by the individual owners. Newspaper holiday advertisements from both the single owner and the multi company agencies are the main source of bookings but recent years have seen the growth of internet advertising. This medium gives the potential customer the ability to view the interior of the property, look upon the map (google) and find directions.

Whichever accommodation is chosen, the town of Whitby is an ideal location for a holiday or short break, whatever time of year.
